'Coherent Synergy' in Science and Technology needed: Dr Chidambaram
Mysore, Aug 21 (UNI) Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India Dr R Chidambaram today stressed the need for ''Coherent Synergy'' in Science and Technology related activities to establish an effective 'innovation ecosystem'.
Delivering the DVN Memorial Lecture at the Institution of Engineers (India) here, he said that globalisation of Industrial R and D was valuable and its growth was perhaps inevitable.
''The Science and Technology system contributes the maximum to national development, reduces a variety of efforts in human resources development and R and D with prioritization, academia-industry interaction, international collaboration and others. But there must be synergy among the concerned parties in every Science and Technology effort. Synergy implies cooperative interaction and coherence collectively among all the efforts, coherence implies phase relationship no space time synchonisation.'' He said that making technology choices requires technology foresight and this has to be done in a national perspective. The critical technologies for India today, in his opinion, range from strategic technologies (Nuclear, Space and Defence related) to rural development related technologies. Technological progress was driven by innovation. Innovation could be incremental on an old technology or radical, leading to a new technology. India could be an innovation leader in all technologies across the board. R and D efforts must either be important to science on beneficial to society or both.
