BJP doubts authenticity of CDs submitted to Nanavati panel

Ahmedabad, Aug 21 (UNI) The Bharatiya Janata Party today expressed doubts on the veracity of the two CDs, submitted by senior police official Rahul Sharma before the Nanavati-Shah Commission, probing the Godhra carnage and its aftermath.

As the CDs have not been obtained by Mr Sharma personally, the correctness of details they contain was ''doubtful'', said BJP's counsel Vijay Patel, in a reply submitted to the Commission on an application of a rights organisation Jan Sangharsh Manch, calling for an analysis of the CDs.

The CDs containing records of mobile phone calls made and received by top politicians and government officials in March 2002, when the riots broke out in the state, were submitted by Mr Sharma during his deposition before the panel two years back.

The Commission had earlier asked the State government to suggest names of agencies that would probe the CDs.

Today, government counsel T S Nanavati named Forensic Science Laboratory, Gandhinagar as an apropriate agency for the task.

But the BJP in its reply however said as the officer has not stated who had created the CDs and and what were its contents, and also the creator of the CDs has not presented himself before the panel, therefore no orders should be passed on the CDs.

It further said as the discs did not contain telephonic conversations between the persons and only indicate the calls recieved and made from particular phones, therefore it has no relevance to the Commission.

Stating that disclosure of the contents of the CDs could breach privacy of the persons concerned, the BJP said information should be disclosed only with consent or order from appropriate authority.
