More water released to sea from Prakasam Barrage

Vijayawada, Aug 20 (UNI) Due to fresh inflows, authorities at the Prakasam Barrage discharged more flood water into the sea today.

About 4.84 lakh cusecs were discharged into the sea till 0900 hs, an Irrigation Department official told UNI.

The full reservoir level (FRL) of the barrage stood at 13.6 feet and all the 70 crest gates fully lifted to discharge the water.About 18,218 cusecs of water was released into irrigation canals.

Due to heavy discharges from Jurala and Srisailam Reservoirs, about five lakh cusecs of water was released from the Nagarjunasagar Dam and the water would reach the barrage by tomorrow, he said.

As there was no sign of flood water receding in the low-lying areas downstream of the barrage, the district administration continued to house people in relief camps.

The flood situation would continue to remain grim for the next 24 hours, he added.
