Monsoon session of UP legislature from tomorrow

Lucknow, Aug 20 (UNI) A brief monsoon session of the Uttar Pradesh legislature that begins here tomorrow is expected to be stormy with the Opposition raking up several issues to embarrass the Mulayam Singh Yadav government.

This session of the assembly would probably be the last opportunity for the government and the opposition to score against each other before the elections slated early next year.

V P Singh's agitation against the Reliance Dadri power project, the deteriorating law and order, the problems of the farmers and several other issues including corruption at the government level would be the main agenda for the opposition to frustrate the state government during the session.

The main agenda for the treasury bench would be to ensure the second supplementary budget sails smoothly and several other bills to be tabled in the house. The Samajwadi Party-led government might also make some populist announcement in view of the assembly polls as this would be the second supplementary budget within six months of passage of the main budget.

Unprecedented security cover has been set up in and around the Vidhan Bhawan during the session which is expected to sit only for five days. For the first time the legislators would not be allowed to carry any bag or briefcase with them inside the house.

The opposition had already made their intention clear as the major opposition parties BJP and BSP have boycotted the chief minister's luncheon meeting in connection with the session.

The assembly which meets tomorrow would condole the death of two sitting MLAs and witness absence of nine members- 5 of Loktrantrik Bahujan Dal and 4 of the ruling Samajwadi Party- who had been disqualified by speaker Mata Prasad Pandey for violating their respective party whips.

Principal secretary (Assembly) R P Pandey said the house would be adjourned on the opening day tomorrow after observing condolence on the death of two sitting MLAs, Haji Mustaq Solanki and Ramswaroop Singh. The second supplementary budget would be tabled in the house on August 22 while it would be passed on August 24. The session is expected to end on August 25.

Leader of the opposition in the assembly Lalji Tandon said here that BJP would bring several adjournment motions in the house related to deteriorating law and order and farmers problem.

'' BJP would not allow the government to take the opposition for granted'', Mr Tandon asserted.

BSP legislature party leader Swami Prasad Maurya also said his party legislators would demonstrate inside and outside the house against lawlessness in the state.

Congress legislature party leader Pramod Tiwari said though his party was supporting the government on certain issues, they would join the opposition in the failures of the government.

Meanwhile, state parliamentary affairs minister Mohammad Azam Khan maintained that government was ready to hear the opposition in a democratic manner.
