Migration of workers worry Surat industries

Surat, Aug 20 (UNI) Large scale migration of workers from Surat is a major cause of worry for the industrial sector here, as the industries are not able to resume their production until the workforce returns.

According to sources at South Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCI), a large number of workers from both diamond and textile industries migrated from the city fearing that there would not be jobs in the coming days.

''There is also a fear that it will be difficult for them to survive in the city without jobs and any epidemic outbreak may cause more problems,'' a SGCCI office bearer said.

To prevent more migration of workforce, SGCCI is planning to distribute food packets and other facilities which will inspire the labourers to remain in the city.

Accordong to a rough estimate around 1,000 diamond units have been shut for want of work force.

''The main reason for the stoppage of production in diamond and textile sector is the lack of workforce,'' another source at SGCCI said.

''If the workers are not returning immediately the loss for the Surat industries will be much higher,'' the source added.
