Jaymala Shiledar chosen for Lata Mangeshkar award

Mumbai, Aug 20 (UNI) Veteran singer-actress of Marathi musical theatre Jaymala Shiledar has been chosen for this year's Lata Mangeshkar award instituted by the Maharashtra Government to honour excellence in music.

The award comprises a purse of Rs one lakh, a citation and a memento.

Music composer Snehal Bhatkar and playback singer Manna Dey have been chosen for the award for the year 2004 and 2005 respectively.

The award presentation will be held at New Delhi on October six this year.

Ms Shiledar, who celebrates her 80th birthday tomorrow, has learnt music from Moghubai Kurdikar and Govindrao Tembe. She has performed in 44 different musical plays and portrayed different characters. In the last 50 years, she has trained over 500 students in ''natya sangeet''.

She instituted Marathi Rangbhoomi, a forum to promote ''natya sangeet'' along with her husband Jairam Shiledar and daughters.

Theatre critics credit her with bringing alive her performances on stage like Bal Gandharv.
