Border town limping back towards normalcy

Imphal, Aug 20 (UNI) The border town of Moreh at Manipur's Chandel district has now a semblance of normalcy after about eight days of stir by students and other bodies after a student leader was found shot dead.

Moreh, the border town at the Manipur Myanmar border about 110 km from Imphal, was in a crisis after the President of All Manipur students' Union (AMSU), Chandel district committee, Sunil Agarwal was found shot dead on Aug 12.

K Ranjit, Bijoy Koijam, Thangso Baite all MLAs and senior officials, who were camping in the border town for few days, were finally able to ink an agreement with the students and other bodies in the border town, officials said.

The Joint Action Committee against the killing of Sunil Agarwal had put up some demands. However, it was finally agreed to six points.

Officials said the government had assured to punish those involved in the killing and to enquire if there was any lapse on the part of the security personnel to save the student leader.

The government had also decided to increase strength of Indian Reserve Battalion personnel at Moreh. An ex-gratia of Rs 1 lakh will be given to the bereaved family member.

Due to the stir the international border trade at Moreh between India and Myanmar were affected and traffic on national highway no 39 from Imphal to Moreh was also affected which was finally restored today.
