Angad, Vaishali win Nagpur Half-Marathon

Nagpur, Aug 20 (UNI) Angad Kumar from the Bengal Engineer Group Centre, Roorkee, won in the men's category and Vaishali Chatare from Central Railway, Nagpur, in the women's category at the Rajiv Gandhi Renewable Energy Half Marathon here today.

Angad clocked one hour 9.38 minutes to win the cash prize of Rs 50,000, while Vaishali did likewise with a timing of one hour 21.51 minutes.

The runners from Nagpur dominated in the women's category, winning the first ten spots with ease. However, the race ended in disappointment for Nagpur stalwart Madhuri Gurnule. Madhuri, who recently won the Thane Marathon, had to opt out barely 30 minutes from flag-off after 6.5 kilometres as she could not carry on due to ill health. Madhuri was joint leader with Monica Raut at this juncture, with Vaishali and Sarita Marbade just behind. While Vaishali went on to win the race, Sarita finished second and Monica third.

Angad, the Army record holder in 10,000 and 5,000 metres, said after the race that he was confident about winning. Vaishali said she was confident of finishing among the first three, but had not expected to emerge the winner.

The event was held to coincide with the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi to promote the use of non-conventional energy.
