Velsao Pale stuns reiging champions Dempo 2-1
Margao, Aug 19 (UNI) Velsao Pale shocked reigning champions Dempo by 2-1 in the Hutch GFA professional league match played here at Fatorda Stadium today.
Velsao, who had better share of exchanges, surged ahead as early as in the 15th minute of the first half through Cavin Lobo off a well measured pass received from Desmond Fernandes. Dempo restored parity in the 34th minute through John Dias, who headed in following a flag kick taken by Clifford Miranda. 1-1 Terrence Lobo of Velsao scored the second goal for his side in the 42nd minute of the first half. His header found the net off a cross pass from Desmond Fernanades. 2-1.
After the change over, Dempo made some desperate attempts for an equaliser but Velsao Pale goalkeeper Martin Dias brought off some good saves. He was also adjudged the ''Man of the Match'' today.
In the other match played at Duler ground in north Goa, Churchill Brothers held spirited Sporting Club de Goa to a goaless draw and split points. Sporting could have won the match outright had they utilised some good opportunites before them in both the halves.
With this round match, Sporting leading the table with four points from two outings, followed by Valsao Pale, Vasco Sports Club and Salgaocar with 3 points each. Churchill follow with 2 points and and Dempo is at the bottom with one point from two outings each.
