TTAADC readies schemes for tribals
Agartala, Aug 19 (UNI) The Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council(TTAADC) has prepared a ten-year plan for the development of education system in the remote tribal dominated areas of the state.
A Rs 3,73,38,100 rpt 3,73,38,100 project proposal would be sent to the state's Tribal Welfare Department for final approval, Executive member in-charge of education, TTAADC, Radhacharan Debbarma said adding that once the project is implemented, the socio-economic scenerio would be changed.
TTAADC and the Education department have jointly identified 19 tribal groups in the state.
The project stressed the need of bringing the Reangs, the oldest tribes in the state, to bring them to the mainstream.
The total population of Reangs in the state was 37,537 and their main livlihood was Jhum cultivation. They live in the remote areas of Kanchanpur, Longtharai Valley, Ambassa, Gandacherra and Amarpur subdivisions in North, Dhalai and South Ditricts respectively.
In a survey, it was found that the illiterate population in West district was 78.50 percent, 55.75 per cent in South district. In Dhalai district 67.08 per cent and in North district it was 67.57 percent.
The TTAADC has taken steps to admit tribal children in various Anganwadi centres and junior basic schools to spread literacy.
Residential schools would be set up in five places of Dasda, Ganganagar, Damcherra, Manikpur and Karbook. Sixty per cent seats would be kept reserved for the Reangs, Mr Debbarma informed.
He called upon the tribal communities to send their children to schools.
