Thousands evacuated in Guj; TN, Udaipur issue flood alerts
New Delhi, Aug 19 (UNI) Thousands of people were today evacuated from several parts of Central and North Gujarat following release of 12 lakh cusecs water from Kadana and Dharoi dams even as 11 districts of Tamil Nadu faces flood threat and ten people killed in rain-related incidents in Rajasthan.
Army has been called in Kheda district in Gujarat to tackle any eventuality. A technical team comprising 50 Army personnel with two boats have arrived, district Collector R R Varsani said.
The Army was on standby in Rajasthan's Udaipur city as all water bodies in the region were overflowing due to torrential rains over the past few days.
In view of overflow from the Mettur Dam this morning, 11 downstream districts in Tamil Nadu -- Salem, Namakkal, Erode, Karur, Tiruchirapalli, Thanjavur, Pudukottai and Perambalur -- have been placed on alert.
In the Lake city of Udaipur, Asia's largest manmade Jaisamand lake has been overflowing since Saturday. Power and water supply has been disrupted and communication lines have snapped.
