Ten feared killed due to torrential rains in Rajasthan
Jaipur, Aug 19 (UNI) Ten people have been killed in rain-related incidents in Rajasthan even as Army was called in to launch the relief work in Jodhpur and Udaipur follwing torrential rains.
Four school students were swept away in Nana town in Pali district while five people in a car feared washed away due to flash floods in the Falana river in Jodhpur district. Army was called in into launch rescue operations.
In Chittorgarh district one person was killed due to house collapse.
Reports from Jodhpur say 25 cusecs of water was discharged from Jawai dam in Pali district raising the threat of flood in Barmer and Jalore regions.
Vehicular traffic from Jodhpur towards Pali and Sirohi had been suspended and RAC has been alerted to tackle the situation.
Torrential rains over the past few days have drenched Banswara and Udaipur districts in south Rajasthan while the temperature shot to 40 degrees in Bikaner today in north-western part of the state.
Traffic on the Udaipur-Banswara national highway was disrupted following the collapse of Peepalkund bridge due to the gushing waters of the Mahi dam. The 16 gates of the dam were today opened as the water level crossed the danger level due to continual rains in the area.
The overflowing Chap river has marooned a dozen villages in Gadi tehsil and caused damange to the standing crops.
Senior district officals were camping in the marooned areas.
Health Minister Bhawani Joshi today visited the affected villages.
Eighteen out of the 19 dams in he district were overflowing.
The water level in Gandhi Sagar dam on Chambal river in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan border was recorded at 1311.40 ft today. The five surrounding districts have been put on alert.
The weather office has predicted very heavy rains at few places in south and south-east Rajasthan in the next 24 hours while moderate rains at many places in rest of the state.
