SFI holds HP University; NSUI gains in colleges

Shimla, Aug 19 (UNI) The Student's Federation of India (SFI) continued to maintain its hold over the Himachal Pradesh University, winning all the four Student Central Association (SCA) seats, while NSUI made major inroads in the colleges bagging the maximum number of 66 seats.

''The SFI candidates in the HP University have defeated the rival Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) candidates,'' former SFI leader Tikender Singh Panwar told UNI over the phone.

He said the Federation's SCA panel president Surinder Verma bagged 820 votes as against 717 polled by the ABVP candidate, vice president 866 (ABVP 654), general secretary 932 (ABVP 591) and joint secretary 808 (ABVP 630).

The SFI has lost only nine SCA seats, all the four in 2001 and three and two seats respectively on two other occasions, to the AVBP in the SCA polls since 1978 when elections to the University were first held.

However, the SFI did not perform that well in the elections to the colleges of the state, winning only 38 seats out of a total of 156 seats in 39 colleges for which the results were available till 1845 hrs, while the NSUI bagged 66 seats.

The ABVP had bagged 45 seats in different colleges of the state.

The student wing of the Shiv Sena, Vidyarthi Sena, made its presence felt in the state, winning two SCA seats in Government College, Amb in Una district, while Bilaspur Student Association (BSA) won all the four seats in Bilaspur Government College, defeating the ABVP candidates.
