Scientists prepare nutrition guidelines for sportspersons
Patiala, Aug 19 (UNI) Scientists from the National Institute of Nutrition and International Life Sciences Institute have worked in tandem to prepare guidelines on nutrition and hydration for ecxellence in sports.
In their recommendations, the scientists have suggested dividing sportspersons into six groups according to their macro and micro nutrients requirements.
They suggested a menu on the basis of caloric requirements as well as body weight of sportspersons. They also recommended setting up a nutrition cell at the NIS, specialised training for cooks, orientation for coaches and sportspersons before they leave abroad for competition besides setting up separate sports mess for coach group of sports.
According to Executive Director of the NIS Laxman Singh Ranawat, the scientists had collaborated with the NIS scientists and national, academic and foreign coaches to arrive at a consensus.
Mr Ranawat told UNI that these recommendations, highly appreciated by the Director General of Sports Authority of India, Ratan Watal and Union Sports Ministry, would be implemented soon.
