LF announces candidates' name for byelections

Kolkata, Aug 19 (UNI) The ruling Left Front in West Bengal today announced the names of candidates for byelections in three Lok Sabha and one Assembly constituencies to be held on September 16.

Left Front Committee Chairman Biman Basu said Parliamentary Affairs Minister and prominent CPI(M) leader Sailen Sarkar would be the Front nominee from Malda Parliamentary seat, left vacant following the death of former Union Minister ABA Ghani Khan Chowdhury while Mr Abu Ayash Mondal, a CPI(M) MLA and Mr Narahari Mahato of the Forward Bloc had been selected as candidates from Katwa and Purulia Parliamentary seats respectively.

The Front decided to renominate Mr Pankaj Ghosh(CPI-M) as its nominee from Bongaon Assembly constituency.

Elections were necessitated in Katwa following the death of CPI(M) MP Mahboob Jahedi while Mr Bir Singh Mahato, the sitting Forward Bloc MP, relinquished after he was sentenced to imprisonment by the court in connection with a criminal case.

The Bongaon Assembly seat fell vacant following the death of Mr Bhupen Seth, shortly after his election on Trinamool Congress ticket in the last Assembly elections.

Notification for the byelection would be issued on August 23 , while filing of nominations would commence from August 30 and scrutiny would take place the next day. The last day for withdrawal of nomination is September 2 and counting would be held on September 19.
