Govt will take steps to ensure safe arrival of refugees: CM
Chennai, Aug 19 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi told the Assembly today that the Government would take steps in consultation with Navy officials to ensure safe arrival of Tamil refugees from strife-torn Sri Lanka.
Responding to Deputy Leader of the Opposition O Panneerselvam, who raised the issue during zero hour, he said the Government was already taking steps in this regard.
Pointing out that the Centre's monthly assistance of Rs 200 to refugees had been enhanced to Rs 400 with the State's contribution, he said the Government was prepared to extend further assistance to the refugees.
Mr Karunanidhi said the issues relating to identification of a spot from where the refugees could be picked up and brought safely to Tamil Nadu would be discussed with Navy officials.
Earlier, Mr Panneerselvam said the Sri Lankan army was after the Ealam Tamils. Many including a six-month-old baby had died mid-sea, he said and urged the Government to take steps to ensure the safe arrival of refugees.
