Army alerted in Udaipur over flood threats
Udaipur, Aug 19 (UNI) The district administration has alerted the Army in view of the increasing flood threats as all water bodies in the region are overflowing due to torrential rains over the past few days.
Asia's largest manmade Jaisamand lake is overflowing since Saturday. The 27-feet deep lake, which earlier overflowed in 1994 and 1991, can hold 14,650 mcft water. Before the monsoon water level in the lake was just six feet.
Hiranmagri area is totally waterlogged and has been cut off from the main city. The entry to the suburb is under five feet water. The Sabina road leading to Banswara district is also submerged.
Power and water supply has been disrupted and communication lines are dead. Udaipur residents are having a harrowing time having to grapple with dark hours and continuous rains.
The only water source of the famous Pichola lake - Sisarma river has swelled upto 12 feet and water is flowing four feet over the bridge of this river.
Around 35 low-lying areas in the city are under water and over three dozen families have been evacuated from their houses.
Udaisagar, Fatehsagar, Swaroopsagar, Badi Talab, Chota and Bada madar, Nela lake, Jogiyo lake, Goverdhansagar and others are all flowing above the danger level.
The administration has asked families in the area to evacuate to safer places.
Udaipur received 95 mm rainfall till Saturday morning. Most colonies in the city are surrounded by water and the administration is taking steps to shift people to safer places.
