74 people tested HIV positive in Kishanganj

Kishanganj, Aug 19 (UNI) About 74 people have been tested HIV positive in the border district of Kishanganj in Bihar till April end.

This grim truth was revealed at a workshop on Aanganbari Sevika and HIV/AIDS, organised by CHARCA (Co-ordinated HIV/AIDS Response through Capacity building and Awareness) here yesterday.

Kishanganj is one of the seven districts across the country and only one in Bihar where UNICEF-funded CHARCA project has been taken up.

The possible HIV prevalence rate in this district is also as high as 1.97 per cent.

''Kishanganj railway station has been selected for installing an Information Centre in view of the migrant population,'' CHARCA co-ordinator Haroon Rasheed said.

Kishanganj District Magistrate Daya Nandan Prasad said 'Aanganbari Sevikas,' have been entrusted with the responsibility to create awareness among people in the rural areas and teach them preventive methods.

Professor Sajal Prasad said Aanganbari sevikas and peers could really educate the womenfolk in the rural areas on the impending disaster.
