East-West corridor begins in NE
Aizawl, Aug 17 (UNI) The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has begun construction of more than 3000 kms East-West corridor in North East region, one of the biggest project in the country.
The proposed NHAI project, connecting Silchar (Asom-Mizoram border) in the region by a four-lane highway would change the concept of road communication in the area, official sources said today.
More than 5,000 engineers and suppliers have been emlpoyed for this huge project, besides, the Union Shipping and Surface Transport Ministry had also launched a special accelerated road development programme to connect all the state capitals in NE region, the officials said.
The first phase of the programme approved at an estimated cost of Rs 4000 crore aimed to expand the highways here to about 1246 km four-lane routes.
About 85 district headquarters in the region would be benefitted through these improved and upgraded roads, the official sources said adding the second phase of the programme would include 83 roads with total length of more than 6,000 km.
