TN House condoles death of 61 Tamil girls in Lanka air strike

Chennai, Aug 17 (UNI) Expressing shock and grief over the death of 61 Tamil girls in an air-strike in Mullaitheevu district of Sri Lanka on August 14, the Tamil Nadu Assembly today condemned the Lankan armed forces for the ''uncivilised, barbaric and inhuman'' act.

There was no second opinion that such ''unpardonable incidents'' should be brought to an end, the House said in a condolence resolution.

Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to prevail upon the Sri Lankan Government to stop the killing of innocent Tamils who were fighting for a stable lifestyle and security and find a solution to the problem through talks, he said.

The House expressed its condolence and deep sympathy over the death of school girls and observed silence for two minutes as a mark of respect to them.

Following this, the members of the House, cutting across party lines, condemned the ''brutal killing'' of Tamil girls by the Lankan armed forces.

The Dalit Panthers of India (DPI) staged a walk out in protest against the Centre's ''silence'' on the issue.
