Police moves application for custody of SIMI activists
Kochi, Aug 17 (UNI) Police today moved an application before a local court, seeking custody of five suspected activists of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).
The activists of the fundamental organisation were remanded to 14-day judicial custody last night.
Police said the application for police custody was moved before Paravoor Chief Judicial Magistrate Sujetha for further interrogation of the suspects.
Yesterday police recorded the arrest of Saduli (24), Abdul Aziz (27), Shammi (20) all from Kottayam district, and Anzar (25), Nizammudin (24) both from Aluva, who were taken into custody on Tuesday for interrogation.
Cases have been registered against them under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act of 1957.
Meanwhile, 14 other youth, who were taken into custody on suspicion of having links with SIMI were freed today even though they would be under police surveillance.
Acting on a tip-off that SIMI activists were conducting a meeting in an auditorium in Binamipuram, police raided the place and took into custody 18 suspected activists on Tuesday.
One more person was nabbed by the police yesterday.
