After great floods, massive cleaning operation begins in Surat
Surat, Aug 17 (UNI) With the flood situation in the city returning to normalcy, the district administration has undertaken a massive cleaning operation.
The administration has pressed into service 7,000 sweepers and health workers who have removed 31,200 tonnes of garbage from the roads with dumper trucks, tractor-trailors and JCBs so far. About eight lakh kg of DDT and other disinfectants have been sprinkled in various parts of the city, said an official release.
Chief Minister Narendra Modi, along with his senior Cabinet colleagues, is camping in the city to oversee the cleaning work.
South Gujarat Vij Company (SGVL) has restored power supply to 4,32,190 households of the total 4,33,290 domestic connections.
All the 12 sub stations of SGVL are functioning, including 89 feeders to its full capacity. With the 220 KV Ichchapore restored, the industry is expected to begin its operations soon. Torrent company is expected to restore all the domestic connections to the city by late evening today, the release said.
So far 3,174 tonnes of fresh vegetables and 40.15 lakh litres of milk have been distributed in the city. Over six lakh litres of petrol and over two lakh litres of diesel have also been sold by the city petrol pumps, while 2.75 litres of kerosene was sold in the flood-affected areas.
All the four water works in the city have started normal water supply, the release said.
The SMC's health department has deployed 647 medical teams to make a door-to-door survey and give medical assistance to citizens. As many as 7,80,942 people have so far been examined and 78,888 were treated in the flood-affected areas. Even 600 animals in the city have been treated by veterinary teams from Animal Husbandry, while 2,028 more carcasses have been removed.
Many voluntary organisation from Valsad, Vapi, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Rajkot, Jamnagar and even Mumbai sent truckloads of food packets and water pouches, the release added.
