Kochi, Aug 16 (UNI) The police today took into custody one more suspected activist of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) from Muttom, near Kalamassery, even as the investigating team recorded the arrest of five of the 18 SIMI activists detained yesterday for interrogation.

Police took into custody Zakir Azim (27), an engineer working as a lecturer in Aluva, for interrogation.

Azim, who hailed from Chennai, was the room-mate of the arrested Saduli and had cases against him for unlawful activities, they said.

Meanwhile, police recorded the arrest of Saduli (24), Abdul Aziz (27), Shammi (20), all from Kottayam District and Anzar (25) and Nizamuddin (24), both from Aluva. The others are still in police detention and are being interrogated.

Cases have been registered against them under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act of 1957, police said.

Acting on a tip-off that SIMI activists were conducting a meeting in an auditorium at Binamipuram yesterday, police raided the place and took into custody 18 suspected activists.

They also seized some literature detailing SIMI's activities in India and pamphlets and books printed in Pakistan.
