Katuwal as Nepal Army Chief strongly opposed
Kathmandu, Aug 16: Human rights activists representing different human rights organisations have strongly protested Nepal government's decision of promoting Lieutenant General Rukmangat Katuwal to the post of acting Army Chief, media reports said.
Gen Katuwal was allegedly involved in human rights violations when he was the Chief of the regional headquarters of the Nepali Army in Nepalgunj, Kantipur quoted the joint statement as saying.
''The promotion indicates that the government has a weak will power to stop impunity,'' they alleged.
They have also demanded that the government respect human rights and rule of law by stripping Gen Katuwal off all the responsibilities.
The government on Monday appointed Gen Katuwal to the post of acting Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) after General Pyar Jung Thapa went on a one-month leave before his retirement.
The human rights activists include Sushil Pyakurel, Dr Gauri Shankar Lal Das, Subodh Pyakurel, Dr Arjun Karki, Dr Gopal Krishna Siwakoti, Dr Renu Rajbhandari, Mandira Sharma, Shovakar Budhathoki, Bhawani Kharel, Kundan Aryal.
