Manipur celebrates I-Day amid militants' boycott call
Imphal, Aug 15: Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh today appealed to all to remain united and remember the sacrifices made by the freedom fighters to attain independence.
Speaking during the observation at 1st Manipur Rifles ground he said, ''Had we been united, the British would not have been able to conquer India. Hence remembering the past we should stop fighting among ourselves and bury all separatist tendencies.'' The state celebrated the day amid tight security in view of the general strike called by five militant groups operating in the north east.
Due to the strike and boycott call from 1 am till 5.30 pm today by the militants the roads were empty and business establishments were shut. All inter state bus services were also cancelled.
The function began with the chief minister unfurling the flag and reviewing a parade. Parade Commander I Muivah, IPS, accompanied the chief minister.
Later Mr Singh gave away awards to police and fire service personnel. The President's medal for gallantry award was conferred on Krishnatombi, SI. The President's medal for distinguished service was conferred on Kipgen, DIG and Kh Dhanachandra, Assistant Commandant. The President's award for meritorious service was given to Md Zahiruddin and H Bijoy.
Battalions of CRPF, Indian Reserve Battalion, Manipur Police, Fire Service, Home Guards, NCC scouts and students took part in the colourful parade.
Governor S S Sidhu will host a reception on the occasion at Raj Bhawan later this evening.
The Governor in a message said while celebrating Independence Day all the people should renew their pledge to protect the hard won freedom at any cost and under any circumstance and re-dedicate themselves to the task of nation building.
