Guwahati, Aug 14 (UNI) The entire North East was brought under a security net on the eve of Independence day as various militant outfits of the region gave a boycott call of the celebrations.

A high alert has been sounded in Asom even as the Army declared suspension of operations since last night amidst a spurt in United Liberation Front Asom's offensives.

The banned outfit, which is in indirect talks with the Centre, had stepped up strikes over the past two weeks.

Frisking of passengers and checking of luggage and vehicles were on throughout the state.

Bus depots, railway stations and airports have been covered in the security blanket with the forces on high alert.

Security measures have been tightened in Meghalaya following various militant outfits' call to boycott the Independence Day celebrations in the region.

A high alert has been sounded in Garo Hills, in view of intelligence reports that ULFA might disrupt the day's function.

The Naga regiment along with the state police and para-military forces has launched 'Operation Drill' in susceptible areas of Garo Hills bordering Asom, official sources told UNI in Shillong.

Garo Hills have been used by the ULFA and other ultra groups as their safe corridor to sneak inside their training camps in Bangladesh.

In capital Shillong, prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC were clamped in view of the 24-hour bandh called by the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council to boycott tomorrow's celebration.
