Kalam to inaugurate 150th Year Varsity celebrations

Chennai, Aug 14: President A P J Abdul Kalam will inaugurate the 150th Foundation Day celebrations of University of Madras on September 4.

He will also inaugurate the renovated Senate House, according to Varsity Vice-chancellor Prof S P Thiagarajan.

The renovation of the Senate House is nearing completion.

Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi would launch the 150th year projects and centres of the University on the occasion.

Union and State Ministers would release the 'Commemorative Stamp and First Day Cover' and publications like the 'Photo Book on the 150 Years of Excellence', 'Senate House: History and Restoration', AIU Special Issue on University of Madras, University News Letter, Souvenir and books on the 150th Year Book project of the University.

A song on the University composed by eminent lyricist Vairamuthu would also be rendered. The song would be sung in all the affiliated colleges of the university during important functions, Prof Thyagarajan said.

During the year-long celebrations that would conclude with the 150th convocation in September 2007, the University would organise international conferences and seminars.
