Israeli army kills Hizbollah man after ceasefire
JERUSALEM, Aug 14: Israeli troops shot dead a Hizbollah fighter in southern Lebanon today after he opened fire on them, marking the first casualty since a ceasefire went into effect, the Israeli army said.
A military spokesman said the man was among a group of ''armed terrorists'' who approached the army position and said the army would ''continue to defend our forces acting in the area.'' An army spokeswoman confirmed the man's death.
She also said troops deployed in another part of southern Lebanon shot another Hizbollah guerrilla who had approached them and aimed his gun at them. It was not immediately known whether he had survived his wounds.
The Israeli army had said prior to the ceasefire, which took effect at 1030 hrs, that its troops would stop offensive actions but would defend forces deployed in the territory, which they had pushed into soon after the start of the war on July 12.
