Heavy rains bring respite to capital

New Delhi, Aug 14 (UNI) After witnessing a predominantly sunny weather over the last week, the capital today experienced heavy rains with the cloudy sky indicating possibility of more rainfall in the coming days.

Light showers began at 1000 hours this morning and gradually changed into a heavy squall, providing the much needed relief from the hot and humid conditions of the past few days, bringing down the mercury by a few degrees.

Though about 0.8 mm of rainfall was recorded till 1130 hours, the figure was likely to go up as rain was still continuing, the weather office said.

With the sky being heavily overcast, more rains with few heavy spells were likely to be witnessed during the day.

The weather department has forecast a generally cloudy sky with possibility of rain and thundershowers in a few areas during the next 24 hours. They, however, predicted humid conditions to prevail for another day. The coming days could also witness more light showers.

The weathermen said this morning's low pressure area over southern parts of West Rajasthan and neighbourhood persisted under the influence of which fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls were likely tp occur over Saurashtra and Kutch and southwest Rajasthan, which in turn could result in some rains in parts of Northwest India, including Delhi in the next few days.

This morning's spell broke the lull in rainfall activity in the last couple of weeks. The lull in rainfall, coupled with bright sunlight, had led to a constant rise in mercury over the past one week.
