Tennis-Gasquet subdues Murray to reach Toronto final
TORONTO, Aug 13 (Reuters) Frenchman Richard Gasquet subdued British teenager Andy Murray 6-2 7-5 to reach the final of the Toronto Masters.
Gasquet will now await the winner of the second semi-final yesterday between world number one Roger Federer of Switzerland and 15th seeded Chilean Fernando Gonzalez.
After a slow start to the season, the 20-year-old Gasquet has been in red-hot form since the French Open, capturing titles at Nottingham and Gstaad with a 16-3 record. Two of those defeats came against Federer.
Gasquet needed 83 minutes to brush past Murray to reach the second Masters Series final of his career.
Although just one year Murray's senior, Gasquet displayed considerably more poise and confidence than the 19-year-old Scot who he was playing for the first time.
Under brilliant sunshine, Gasquet secured an early break to lead 3-1 and then stretched away to 5-1.
Murray recorded his only break of the match at 5-2 but the Frenchman immediately responded with another break to close out the set.
With new coach Brad Gilbert watching from the stands, the Scot showed plenty of battling spirit through a tight second set that was not decided until Gasquet broke at 6-5, charging into the net to send a backhand winner past Murray.
