UN chief sympathises with flood situation in India
United Nations, Aug 12 (UNI) United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, expressing deep sadness over the deadly Indian floods that killed hundreds and affected millions, has said the world body is prepared to help the government in dealing with the disaster.
''The secretary-general regrets the loss of life due to this tragedy and extends his condolences to the victims and their families,'' the UN chief said.
According to a statement released here yesterday, Mr Annan also commended Indian authorities for their rapid search-and-rescue operations.
He also regretted the damage to property caused by the floods that affected Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat. Annan promised that the world body ''stands ready to offer any assistance requested by the Indian government to support the national response to this disaster.'' UNI XC AD ND0814
