UN calls on Israel, Hizbollah to stop fighting
UNITED NATIONS, Aug 12 (Reuters) The UN Security Council adopted unanimously a resolution calling for an end to fighting between Israel and Lebanon's Hizbollah and authorizing up to 15,000 new peacekeepers to enforce it.
The vote capped weeks of anguished negotiations on a plan to halt the war that began when Israel attacked Lebanon after the July 12 abduction of two Israeli soldiers by Hizbollah guerrillas in a cross-border raid. Hizbollah then rained rockets on northern Israel yesterday.
