Sensex and Nifty up three per cent each for the week

Mumbai, Aug 12 (UNI) The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) sensitive index began the week on a weak note, however, it surprised everyone the very next day by breaching the 11K mark, and this time the sustenance was for a longer period.

The BSE Sensex and the S&P CNX Nifty both closed the week up three per cent from the previous weeks close. Even the hike in crude oil price above the US Dollar 76 per barrel mark could not drag the index in the negative, whereas, the West-Asia crisis no longer makes any impact on the bourses worldwide.

The sectoral indices on the BSE too went up, led by the smallcap index, which went up by 7.5 per cent, and followed by Banking index up 5.5 per cent. The Capital Goods index rose by 4.5 per cent and the Metals and Oil and Gas were up by four per cent each for the week.

However, during the closing days of the week, the Bank of South Korea increased the interest rates by 25 basis points leading to the subdued nature of the benchmark Asian indices.

Major gainers on the index on the last day were - Hero Honda up 3.3 per cent to Rs 696.15, Reliance Industries by 3.17 per cent to Rs 1,011.10, NTPC up by 2.59 per cent to Rs 124.55, Infosys up by 2.02 per cent to Rs 1,742.25 and Grasim Industries up 1.93 per cent to Rs 2,191.90.

Besides the losers on the last day of trading were - ICICI down by 2.60 per cent to Rs 584.50, Reliance Communications down by 1.48 per cent to Rs 279.60, Bharti Airtel down by 1.21 per cent to Rs 404.25, HDFC down by 0.92 per cent to Rs 1,264.45, BHEL down by 0.80 per cent to Rs 2,152.95, and L&T 0.32 per cent to Rs 2,309.70.
