Rs 298 cr to be spent to restore Dal Lake

Srinagar, Aug 12 (UNI) A 100 per cent centrally-funded project of Rs 298 crore has been launched for restoring Dal Lake to its pristine glory, Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Committee on Environment Chairman Mubarak Gul has said.

The chief whip of the opposition National Conference (NC), Mr Gul said Rs 40 crore have been received so far as first installment from the centre.

The project will be implemented for a period of five years and includes de-weeding, drudging, de-silting, removal of encroachments, sewerage treatment and acquisition of land for the rehabilitation of Dal Dwellers.

The members discussed various measures for preserving water bodies of the state that are prone to the threat of degradation and pollution.

He said a decision has been taken at the national level regarding the preservation of all water bodies under the Joint control of Pollution Control Board and Forest Department.

It was disclosed in the meeting that 1300 families have been rehabilitated in 8 housing colonies with all basic amenities and measures are under way to resettle the rest.
