Rajnath demands enforcement of uniform civil code in India
Panaji, Aug 12 (UNI) BJP president Rajnath Singh today sought enforcement of uniform civil code in the entire country for ensuring ''unity and integrity of the nation without interfering with the Constitution.'' ''When a small, secular and multi-racial cosmopolitan state like Goa has become a shining and singular example of secular India by enforcing a uniform civil code, why not it be enforced in all other parts of the country?'' he questioned.
Winding up his two-day maiden visit to Goa today, Mr Singh told mediapersons that even the Supreme Court had expressed its serious concern twice over implementation of uniform civil code and the same was also expressed by President A P J Abdul Kalam, who said it would promote national unity and integrity.
''Better late than never, let us all make efforts to implement this code at the earliest, without tinkering with the provisions of the Constitution,'' he said.
This, he said, had become a necessity to check demographic distortion of the country. All political parties must sit together to plan a strategy in this regard.
He, however, did not say whether the uniform civil code would be an issue in the coming elections in the country, including Goa.
At the same time, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief regretted formation of 14 governments in the last 15 years and urged the people to restore BJP Government in the coming elections, providing for political stability, growth and prosperity.
The people should teach a fitting lesson to the Congress, which had 'hijacked' the Manohar Parrikar Government last year by playing with the Constitution of the country, he said.
He said Mr Parrikar would be projected as the chief ministerial candidate in the elections slated in May next or earlier. Mr Bal Apte would take care of the Goa affairs in place of late general seretary Pramod Mahajan, he added.
Party's State unit president Rajendra Arlekar and Opposition leader Manohar Parrikar were present on the occasion.
Earlier, Mr Singh paid floral tributes to Goa's first Chief Minister D B Bandorkar at the latter's samadhi at Miramar here, on the occasion of his 33rd death anniversary.
