Olmert backs UN plan, but offensive to continue
JERUSALEM, Aug 11 (Reuters) Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert today backed a UN draft resolution for ending the Lebanon war, but directed the army to press a wider offensive against Hizbollah until a cabinet meeting on Sunday, an official said.
''Following the changes made in the past few hours, the prime minister will recommend on Sunday that the government act in accordance with the resolution,'' a government official said.
At the meeting on Sunday, Olmert will present the draft resolution to his cabinet for a vote, a political source said.
The source added: ''The idea is that the military offensive will continue until then.'' The UN Security Council was headed today for approval of the US-French draft resolution that calls for an end to bloodshed in Lebanon and Israel and authorises up to 15,000 UN troops to enforce it.
