North East reeling under scorching heat

Guwahati, Aug 12 (UNI) The entire North Eastern Region is reeling under scorching heat for the past fortnight due to lack of rainfall.

MET office here said that the region was experiencing about five degree celsius or more temperature above normal, throwing life out of gear.

Guwahati recorded a maximum of 38 degrees temperature yesterday, which was five degrees above normal in August.

A Nowgong report said two persons had died of heat wave in the past two days.

Some domestic animals had also reportedly perished due to the unprecedented heat.

The Zoo authorities here were spraying water through the fire brigade to give the animals some relief.

In all, 19 districts are reeling under a drought-like situation due to lack of rains.

The cultivators in Asom who depend on the monsoon rains to cultivate their land are forced to abandon their work.

The state government had taken some measures to provide water to the farmers by activating about 2 lakh shallow tube wells and low lift pumps.
