Kodagu ZP approves capturing rogue elephants

Madikeri, Aug 12 (UNI) The Kodagu Zilla Panchayat has approved capturing of 22 elephants which had claimed many lives, besides creating hovoc in the district since last one year.

A resolution to this effect was passed at the 20 point program review meeting held yesterday under the chairmanship of Panchayat President Ashok.

In the meeting it was also decided to apprise the government about the gravity of the problem as the forest officials have expressed inability to curtail the menace and appealed for recommending their capture.

So far Rs 6.5 lakhs was released as compensation to the affected in about 450 incidents of elephant attack that have taken place since last one year. Standing crops and properties worth lakhs of rupees were destroyed.

The resolution suggested that the elephants captured could be released at Nagarahole National park or to Dubare forests.
