Come out with independent foreign policy: Buddha tells Centre

Chennai, Aug 12 (UNI) Veteran Marxist Leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Battacharya today demanded the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre come out with an independent foreign policy and not toe the US line.

Strongly opposing the UPA government's policy tilt towards the US in the sphere of foreign policy, Mr Battacharya, addressing a rally here, warned that any country which had played second fiddle to the ''hegemonistic United States'' failed, had suffered.

The UPA Government's present foreign policy had a ''pro-US tilt'' and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) would not support such a policy,'' he said.

Finding fault with the government's nuclear policy also, he said that the CPI(M) has decided not to support UPA Government's nuclear policy as well.'' Accusing the US of trying to impose its hegemony all over the world, he said the Centre should go for an independent Foreign Policy and not succumb to the US.

''We must have our own foreign and nuclear policies,'' he added.
