Central team to visit Indo-Bangla border
New Delhi, Aug 12 (UNI) Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee today assured a delegation of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) that a central team would visit the Indo-Bangladesh border to review the situation following the death of two civilians in cross-border firing on Wednesday.
Mr Mukherjee told a AASU delegation led by its adviser Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharyya that the team would be constituted after discussions with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister Shivraj Patil.
According to AASU sources, the union demanded immediate sealing of the border along Asom as well as freeing of the land under Bangladesh occupation.
The delegation included Asom Gana Parishad MP Sarbananda Sonowal, Asom Unati Sabha Secretary Ramen Dutta and Jayanta Madhab.
The delegation also demanded deportation of illegal Bangladeshi migrants in the state.
The AASU team demanded inspection of the porous border with Bangladesh by the Defence Minister.
