Bhima wrecks havoc in North Karnataka, death toll rises to seven

Bangalore, Aug 12 (UNI) Two more persons died, after they were washed away in ravaging floods, even as swollen Bhima Krishna and their tributaries continued to ravage many parts of North Karnataka today.

A 35 year farmer was washed away in Markhandeya river a tributary of Krishna in Uchgaon of Belgaum district, while a 65-year-woman lost her life when she too was washed away in Bhima river near Tarapur when she was trying to reach a relief centre to collect food.

Five persons, three since yesterday, had earlier died in the flood related incidents which has crippled life in the districts of Belgaum, Bijapur, Gulbarga, Bagalkot and parts of Raichur district.

With Maharashtra releasing more water from Ujjini and Veerabhatkal reservoirs across Bhima the level at Dulikhed, the entry point of the river on the border, rose to 14.35 meters much above the danger mark of 14 metres. 2.73 lakh cusecs was flowing in the river and level at Devulgaon bridge gauging station in Gulbarga district.

However, there was a slight drop in the inflow in Krishna river from the neighbouring state but still large tracts of agricultural land were inundated and nearly 200 villages continued to be affected, many of them marooned.
