TOKYO, Aug 11 (Reuters) The yen steadied against the dollar and the euro on Friday ahead of Japanese growth data and remarks by the Bank of Japan governor that may provide clues on when the central bank will raise interest rates again.

Sterling was stuck near lows marked in the previous session, when the currency took a hit after British police said they had thwarted a plot to blow up trans-Atlantic flights.

''This has resulted in dollar buying, although if you ask why, I have a hard time explaining it,'' said a trader at a Japanese trust bank.

''The pound was sold first and then, since the market's position had been tilted toward dollar-selling, I think we saw some unwinding.'' In early Tokyo trade the dollar was at 115.20 yen, little changed from levels in late U.S. trade.

The euro was nearly flat at $1.2795 and sterling was a tad firmer at $1.8945.

The single European currency was at 147.45 yen a day after climbing to a record high 148.61 yen on electronic trading platform EBS.

The yen faces a couple of possible market-moving events this session.

First up is Japan's gross domestic product for April-June due at 2350 GMT.

GDP likely grew 0.4 percent from the previous quarter, according to a Reuters survey conducted last week, slowing from 0.8 percent growth in January-March.

The poll of 26 economists produced a median forecast of 1.8 percent growth in annualised terms for the quarter.

The growth data, however, may end up lacking the punch to drive the yen sharply higher, the trust bank trader said, adding that the dollar could find support around the previous session's low near 114.70 yen.

Traders will also tune in to BOJ Governor Toshihiko Fukui's remarks after the central bank ends a two-day BOJ policy meeting later this session.

The BOJ, which raised interest rates for the first time in six years at its previous policy meeting in July, is widely expected to keep rates unchanged at 0.25 percent on Friday.
