Volcker: SC to hear petition of NRIs on Aug 18
New Delhi, Aug 11: The Supreme Court today refused to issue notice to the CBI and the Centre on petitions filed by the two Non- Resident Indians(NRIs) whose companies in India were being investigated to ascertain whether they were also involved in oil-for-food scandal in respect of Iraq.
A bench comprising Justices K G Balakrishnan and D K Jain however fixed August 18 as the date of hearing after the case was mentioned before the court by the senior counsel F S Nariman and Mukul Rohtagi on behalf of Vipin Khanna and another whose passports have been seized by the CBI so that the duo may not leave the country during the investigation of the case in which former External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh, his son Jagat Singh and his relative Andlip Sehgal are also facing inquiry.
The petitioners one of whom is reportedly old and heart patient pleaded before the court that they were prepared to provide security of any amount provided they were allowed to go to England.
The duo also alleged that they were initially told that their passports would be returned but the deadline was being extended on one pretext or the other.
The petition filed by Suiman Shegal, father of Andlip Sehgal was withdrawn in the Supreme Court two days ago after his passport was released by the CBI.
