K'taka HC rejects petition seeking restriction on acid sale

Bangalore, Aug 11 (UNI) The Karnataka High Court today rejected a writ petition (PIL) seeking restriction on sale of acids to prevent attacks, especially on women.

City-based advocate A V Amaranathan, in his petition, sought a direction to the authorities to bring in an appropriate legislation to restrict sale of acid, exclude it as an essential commodity under the Essential Commodities Act and amend the IPC to include acid-throwing as a henious offence.

He pointed out that of the 56 acid-throwing incidents reported, the city had earned the dubious distinction of accounting for 30 incidents and in most cases women were the victims.

The Bench, comprising Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph and Mr Justice N K Patil, rejected the petition as not being maintainable and the petitioner was not entitled to the relief claimed by him in the PIL.
