KoPT to expand capacity of Haldia Port

Kolkata, Aug 11 (UNI) Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) will expand the total capacity of Haldia Dock Complex by three million tonnes within 2008.

Speaking at a seminar, organised by Bengal National Chamber of Commerce here today, KoPT Chairman Anup Chanda said that two new berths would be constructed at a cost of Rs 125 crore. The first berth would be ready by April, 2007 and the second one by July, 2007.

'' To meet the growing demand of cargo in this port, two new jetties would be built. This would be completed by 2008, '' he said.

The total capacity of this port is 45 million tonne.

KoPT had registered a growth of 15 per cent over last year in cargo handling. The total amount of cargo handled by Kolkata Port Trsut last year was 52 million tonne, compared to 55 million tonne by Visakhapatnam.

Mr Chanda claimed that last year KoPT was second in the country after Vizag to handle huge amount of cargo.
