Haryana to bring ordinance for women university

Chandigarh, Aug 11 (UNI) The Haryana government would promulgate an ordinance within a couple of days to set up a Women University named after Bhagat Phool Singh at Khanpur Kalan in Sonipat district.

In another move to promote women in the education sector, the state government had reserved 33 per cent for women of the 12,000 vacancies of teachers to be filled up soon, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said today.

He was delivering the inaugural address at a two-day All India Conference of Chairpersons and Secretaries of State Social Welfare Boards organised by the Central Social Welfare Board here.

The conference, being hosted by the Haryana Social Welfare Board, would prepare a blueprint of the programmes of the Central Social Welfare Board for women empowerment for the IIth five year plan.

Mr Hooda said that a decision to set up a Women University had already been taken in a meeting of the State Cabinet recently.

The university would facilitate the emergence of women in the field of higher education with special emphasis on emerging areas of Information Technology, Computer Education, Medical Sciences, Bio-Technology, Environmental Studies, Technology and Management Studies. The Vice-Chancellor of the University would also be a woman, he added.

The Chief Minister said Haryana was the first state to reserve 33 per cent posts of teachers for women.

Referring to the issue of declining sex ratio and the female foeticide, Mr Hooda said only males should not be held responsible for this social evil.

A number of schemes had been implemented by the state government to improve sex ratio and raise the socio-economic status of the women and these have received wide appreciation, he said.
