Antique idol brought back to MP from US
Bhopal, Aug 11 (UNI) An antique stone idol, which was mysteriously stolen from a temple at historical 'Kanvla' village in Mandsaur district about six years back, has been brought back from the United States.
State Culture Minister Lakshmikant Sharma and Culture department Commissioner Pankaj Rag told reporters here that the tenth century idol of 'Lord Varah' -- believed to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu -- was stolen from the 'Varah' temple -- a protected monument under the state government -- on February 29, 2000.
The Indian Embassy in the US had informed the Centre about the idol, which was located in New York few days back. The idol was flown back to the country at an estimated cost of Rs one lakh.
Mr Rag said the Centre had informed about the theft to the Archaeological Survey of India, New Delhi's National Museum, the CBI and custom officials besides providing them photographs.
He said caretakers had been appointed for security of the idol. A caretaker was suspended in connection with the idol's theft.
The Minister said the state government was trying to get back the Rajabhoj era's Goddess Saraswati idol, belonging to Dhar, from London's museum.
The about four feet tall-idol is in its original form and depicts Lord Varah slaying demon Hiranyakashyap for protecting earth. An engraving of earth is found on the idol's right arm. Besides, small idols are engraved in the idol.
