Airports step up security after London terror plot
New Delhi, Aug 11 (UNI) Civil aviation authorities today stepped up security at over 100 airports across the country and banned passengers from taking liquids aboard after London said it foiled a plot to blow up transatlantic flights.
Officials said some flights were delayed as long queues formed at airports in major cities because of the new security measures, which include frisking and intensive baggage checks.
''There is no specific threat as such but we live in a security environment which can be described as dangerous,'' Civil Aviation secretary Ajay Prasad told reporters after reviewing additional measures put in place by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
As quick-reaction police teams armed with light machineguns stood guard, plainclothes policemen mingled with air travellers to check for suspicious characters.
Mr Prasad said new rules on domestic routes allow passengers to carry only one handbag including mobile phones and laptop computer.
But no liquids or gels will be allowed. Baby foods have been excluded.
