Students boycott classes in Srinagar, demands action against CRPF

Srinagar, Aug 10 (UNI) Students of the Amar Singh college today boycotted their classes and took to streets in protest against the killing of a second year student Ghulam Mohammad Sheikh, allegedly by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) at Dalgate yesterday.

However, CRPF spokesman claimed that Sheikh was a militant who was about to lob a grenade when he was killed by an alert jawan.

Police without giving any details said one person was killed in a firing incident and the matter is being investigated.

Police resorted to mild lathicharge to disperse the students near the Amar Singh college when they tried to move towards Lal Chowk in a procession.

However, the students regrouped and managed to reach Moulana Azad Road. However police stopped them when they tried to enter the S P College.

The students, raising anti government and anti CRPF slogans reached press colony near here, where majority newspaper and other media offices are located. They alleged that Sheikh, a regular student of their college was killed by the security forces without any provocation and later labelled him as a militant.

Later, they went back to Amar Singh college in a procession under police cordon.

Meanwhile, shops and other business establishments in Dalgate area remained closed since August 2, a day after two CRPF personnel were killed by militants there.

The shopkeepers alleged that CRPF personnel deployed in the area were not allowing them to reopen their shops and have threatened to take revenge of the killing of CRPF personnel.

Additional security force personnel have been deployed in the area.
