Sheikh Hassan will head the J

Srinagar, Aug 10 (UNI) Sheikh Mohammad Hassan Tarigami was today elected Amir (chief) of Jammu and Kashmir Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) for next three years by the council of representatives.

A spokesman of the JeI Advocate Zahid Ali said Mr Hassan was elected at the end of the two-day extra-ordinary meeting of the ''Majlis-e-Nomayandgan''( council of representatives) here today.

He said Sheikh, replacing Syed Nazir Kashani, will assume the charge from September 1.

Mr Ali said that during the two-day meeting, a number of resolutions were passed.

He said India and Pakistan were urged to take concerete and sincere steps to find a durable solution to the long standing Kashmir issue as per the wishes of the people of the Jammu and Kashmir.

The majlis members were in favour of implementing the United Nations resolutions or holding tripartite talks to find a lasting solution to the issue.

They appealed to world powers to use their good offices and help to resolve the Kashmir issue for lasting peace in the South Asia.

The majlis also expressed grave concern over the Israeli attacks on Lebanon and Palestine and appealed to ''Muslim countries to unitedly fight against the Israeli aggression.

Condemning the alleged Human Rights violations by the security forces, the majlis members demanded action against the security forces involved in ''killing'' of innocent persons in ''fake'' encounters.

They also demanded immediate release of all the detenues, languishing in jails in and outside the state for years without any trial.
